What a Milford Sound tour day looks like
Every one of these tours follows State Highway 94, the Milford Road, because it is the only road into Milford Sound (Piopiotahi). From Te Anau that is 120 km each way, roughly two hours without stops, and 240 km for the day. From Queenstown the round trip is 600 km and takes 12 to 14 hours, about five hours in the vehicle each way, which is why the small-group tours from Queenstown pick up at 6:30am or 7:00am.
The road is where most of the hours go, and the stops are built into the itinerary rather than squeezed in. Expect the Eglinton Valley, the wheelchair-accessible Mirror Lakes boardwalk about 56 km north of Te Anau, Lake Gunn, Pop's View above the Hollyford Valley and Monkey Creek, then the Homer Tunnel: 1.2 km long, 945 m above sea level, about 3.81 m tall and controlled by traffic signals in the summer peak, with waits of up to 20 minutes each way.
At Milford Sound the tours hand you to a boat for a cruise of 1 hour 45 minutes to around 2 hours, down the fiord past Mitre Peak, which rises 1,692 m straight out of the water, and on to the Tasman Sea on the longer sailings. Fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and kea are seen year-round; Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki) turn up at landing beaches from July to December. Keep your distance and let the animals move first.
Rain is part of the day here. Milford Sound averages over 7 metres of rainfall a year and the waterfalls are at their biggest in it, so a rain jacket belongs in your day bag in any month. Between May and November the road can be snow-covered and icy and snow chains may be required, and it is monitored around the clock by the Milford Road Alliance.
Mobile coverage along the road is very limited, with phones at Knobs Flat, the Homer Tunnel for emergencies and Milford Sound. There is no fuel and no shop between Te Anau and Milford Sound, and toilets only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and the terminal. Guided itineraries plan around all three, which is one practical reason to let someone else drive.
Which one fits you
Pick the Milford Sound tour by where you sleep the night before, then by how much of the day you are willing to spend in a seat.
From Te Anau the shortest day is the 7-hour small-group tour with lunch, from NZ$299 and rated 4.9 (982 reviews). It still works in Mirror Lakes, Lake Gunn, Pop's View and the Homer Tunnel, and it picks up from selected Te Anau hotels or meets you at the bus stop by the public toilets.
The highest-rated day on this page also leaves Te Anau: 9.5 hours, from NZ$315, rated 5.0 (1,321 reviews), with a local driver-guide, national park fees, morning tea with home baking and a 1 hour 45 minute nature cruise, followed by time on the Milford Sound waterfront. Choose it if you want the fullest Te Anau day and the option of short walks along the way.
Walkers should take the 9-hour tour from Te Anau, from NZ$327 and rated 5.0 (789 reviews). The group is capped at 15 in a modern minivan, the walks are both guided and self-guided, the cruise runs the length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea, and the picnic lunch can be vegetarian or gluten-free with advance notice. Children under 5 are not carried.
On the smallest budget from Queenstown, the 12-hour coach and cruise from NZ$275, rated 4.7 (973 reviews), does what it says: an air-conditioned coach from the Athol Street bus stop, short walks and photo stops on the Milford Road, a catamaran cruise with tea or coffee and a close pass at Stirling Falls.
Queenstown travellers who want a small group have two 13-hour options. The one from NZ$369, rated 4.9 (3,757 reviews), includes hotel pickup and drop-off at selected locations, a picnic lunch, water and snacks and a boutique cruise. The one from NZ$419, rated 4.9 (2,669 reviews), adds WiFi on board, vans with panoramic windows, local driver-guides and photo stops off the usual line, and provides no water bottles, so pack a reusable one.
Travelling with a child aged 7 or under: the 13-hour Queenstown small-group tour and the 7-hour Te Anau tour both include a booster seat, and both run minibuses with no restroom on board, so the scheduled stops are your toilet breaks. Picnic lunch is not provided for infants aged 0 to 3 on either.
Before you book
- Queenstown departure points: the 12-hour coach and cruise leaves from the Athol Street bus stop, the central pickup point, and the two 13-hour small-group tours include hotel pickup and drop-off at selected locations, with pickups at 6:30am or 7:00am.
- Te Anau departure points: the 9.5-hour tour collects from Te Anau hotels or you meet the guide at 60 Town Centre; the 9-hour walks tour picks up from Te Anau accommodation; the 7-hour tour meets at the bus stop by the public toilets if you are not staying at a pickup hotel.
- Group sizes: 15 travellers maximum on the walks tour from Te Anau and on the premium small-group van from Queenstown, 16 guests on the 9.5-hour Te Anau tour, a full coach on the 12-hour Queenstown day.
- Dietary requirements are noted per person at the time of booking on the small-group tours; vegetarian and gluten-free picnic lunches need advance notice, and lunch is not included for infants aged 0 to 3.
- Booster seats for children aged 7 and under come with the 13-hour Queenstown small-group tour and the 7-hour Te Anau tour; say in advance if you would rather fit your own. The 9-hour walks tour from Te Anau does not take children under 5.
- Bring a rain jacket, warm layers and shoes you can walk a boardwalk in, whatever the forecast says, plus a reusable water bottle for the premium small-group tour from Queenstown, which has refill points during the day instead of bottled water.
- There is no restroom on board the minibuses on the two Cheeky Kiwi itineraries, from Queenstown and from Te Anau, so plan around the stops along the road.
- Drones are prohibited in Piopiotahi Milford Sound and throughout Fiordland National Park, and dogs are not allowed anywhere in the park, including the Milford Road corridor.
- Prices are in New Zealand dollars, are per adult and are 'from' prices; the booking page carries the current dates, times and conditions.
