Prices in New Zealand dollars, sorted by how much of the day the ticket buys. At Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) the sailing is the small part of the bill. Getting yourself to the wharf is where the money goes.

Time on the water barely moves between products. Every day sailing listed here puts you on the fiord for 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, all of it in the same stretch of water inside the marine reserve DOC protects for 16 km along the fiord, under the walls that rise 1,692 m at Mitre Peak. The spread from NZ$143 to NZ$1,735 pays for everything around the boat: how you reach the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, how many people share the rail with you, and whether a meal comes with it.
Commentary comes in a few forms. The lowest-priced boat-only sailing, from NZ$143, hands you the operator's Milford Sound app; the Te Anau full day from NZ$315 has a local driver-guide talking on the road and on board; the flight products carry live pilot commentary, and the premium Queenstown coach adds driver commentary plus a multi-lingual app.
Food and drink is the line most people misread. Hot drinks come with nearly everything; a meal only appears higher up.
Already driving to the terminal: this is the cruise-only level with a quieter deck, from NZ$189, rated 4.9 (3,254 reviews), with coffee, tea and biscuits on board and parking paid separately at the car park machines.
★ 4.9/5 · 3,254 reviews
Cruise-only runs from NZ$143 to NZ$189. You buy the sailing and nothing else, which works if you already have a car and a bed in Te Anau. Coach-and-cruise runs from NZ$275 to NZ$419 and takes the whole day, including the drive, the road stops and in most cases lunch. Fly-and-cruise starts at NZ$895 and squeezes the outing into 4.5 hours, because a fixed-wing flight between Queenstown and the fiord takes about 40 minutes each way against five hours on a coach.
The helicopter sits on its own level at NZ$1,735 for 4 hours, with hotel pickup and drop-off, landing and facility fees, GST and headsets to hear the pilot included. Every flight option is weather dependent, and the pilot can change the route or a landing on the day, which is worth knowing before you commit that much budget.
Compare the levels on total duration as well as price. A 12 hour coach day and a 4.5 hour flight day give you roughly the same time on the fiord.

Distance explains nearly all of the gap. Te Anau to the fiord is 120 km, about two hours without stops, a 240 km round trip for which DOC advises allowing around eight hours with stops, short walks and a cruise. Queenstown and back is 600 km and 12 to 14 hours, with a coach taking about five hours in each direction, which is why DOC suggests basing yourself in Te Anau.
Those hours land straight in the itinerary. The Te Anau full day runs 9.5 hours from NZ$315; the comparable small-group day out of Queenstown runs 13 hours from NZ$369, with pickups at 6:30am or 7:00am. The extra NZ$54 buys six and a half more hours in a vehicle, and all of that premium is driver time, fuel and seat hours rather than anything extra on the water.
There is a crowd cost on top of the money. Milford Sound Tourism, the company that runs the terminal and car parks, puts the quiet windows on the Milford Road before 8am and after 11am, or recommends a night nearby, and a Queenstown departure tends to deliver you into the middle of the coach peak. Sleeping in Te Anau and sailing the next morning is both cheaper and quieter. Keep the Queenstown day tour for the trip where you have exactly one spare day and no reason to change hotels.
Parking is the charge people forget. The boat-only bookings list it as a not-included item: NZ$10 per hour at the main car park, with payment at the machines by card only. Bring a card, since the machines take no cash and issue no printed receipts, and in high summer the listings tell you to allow up to an hour for parking and the walk to the terminal.
No shops and no petrol stations stand between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so fill the tank for the full 240 km return before you leave town, and note that toilets exist only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford Sound itself. Connectivity is not part of any fare either: signal along the road drops away almost entirely, and the phones you can count on are at Knobs Flat, at the Homer Tunnel for emergencies and at Milford Sound. The tunnel is single lane and runs on traffic signals in the summer peak, where delays reach 20 minutes each way.
The road is prone to avalanches, rockfall and landslides between May and November, and it can close or require snow chains; the Milford Road Alliance monitors it around the clock. A transport-inclusive package costs more on paper and hands all of that to a driver who does the run daily, which is the honest argument for the coach and small-group levels in winter.

An overnight berth costs roughly seven times the day-cruise figure, and what it buys is the fiord after the day boats have gone. On the Milford Sound Mariner Overnight Cruise, NZ$1,398 is the from price for 2 days at a rating of 4.7 (167 reviews), and it covers a private cabin with en suite bathroom, dinner, breakfast and the use of kayaks or tender boats. Check-in opens 30 minutes before departure, closes 15 minutes before and the gates shut 5 minutes before; these sailings are sold on final-sale terms.
The smaller option is the Fiordland Jewel, 17.5 hours from NZ$1,449, rated 4.8 (135 reviews), carrying 20 passengers a night, the smallest licensed overnight operation in the fiord. A three-course dinner, breakfast, kayaking, a tender-boat excursion and the top-deck hot tub after dinner are in the price; drinks are extra, and taxes and fees are already included.
Neither overnight price includes getting to Milford Sound, so budget that travel on top. Overnight passengers use the coach park at a flat NZ$30 from 2pm, and anyone who arrives earlier pays the hourly rate until then.
Lower prices here track boat size and how much travel is bundled in, rather than the hour you sail. The cheapest ticket is the NZ$143 boat-only sailing of 1 hour 40 minutes or 2 hours, rated 4.7 (567 reviews), on the large day-cruise vessels, where the Milford Haven carries up to 180 guests and the Milford Mariner up to 120. At that price you give up a live guide, since commentary comes through the operator's app, you give up any food, and parking stays a separate charge.
Step up NZ$36 and the 2 hour smaller-boat sailing from NZ$179 gives you the longest time afloat in the boat-only group, with hot drinks and no charge for children under 3. Another NZ$10 buys the boutique 1 hour 45 minute sailing from NZ$189: a quieter deck for photographs, coffee, tea and biscuits, and nothing sold on board. All three cover the same water.
On the transport-inclusive side the saving works the same way. The NZ$275 coach day from Queenstown is 12 hours with an air-conditioned coach, the cruise and a hot drink, picking up centrally at the Athol Street bus stop; the premium coach day at NZ$379 adds the glass roof, USB charging, driver commentary and a prepared lunch, and the small-group days at NZ$369 and NZ$419 shrink the vehicle to a guided group with a picnic lunch and photo stops off the main run. Pickups at 6:30am and 7:00am are not a budget tier, they exist because the drive is about five hours each way, and they happen to put you on the road before the 8am cut-off Milford Sound Tourism recommends.
Decide by level, then book. Boat only if you are already driving and sleeping in Te Anau. The Te Anau full day from NZ$315 if you want the road stops and a driver. The Queenstown small-group day from NZ$369 if that is where your hotel is. The flight from NZ$895 if you have half a day and no more. Day tours on this site list free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, while the overnight sailings are final sale.
No single child rate runs across these tours. The 2 hour smaller-boat sailing from NZ$179 carries children under 3 at no charge, and the Premium Small Group Tour & Cruise from Queenstown has booster seats for children aged 7 and under, though its picnic lunch does not cover infants aged 0 to 3. The Te Anau walks tour takes nobody under 5.
The day tours listed here allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure time, while both overnight sailings are sold on final-sale terms with no refund. Rain is a weak reason to move a booking, since the fiord averages over 7 metres a year and heavy rain is when the temporary waterfalls run down the walls. Road closures and chain conditions between May and November are the real reason to change plans.
The Award Winning Milford Sound Full Day Tour & Cruise from Te Anau, from NZ$315, lists national park fees among its inclusions. The other tours on this site do not show them as a separate line, so read the inclusions on the tour page before you book. Drinks are excluded on that Te Anau day, and alcoholic drinks are a paid extra on the premium coach and the overnight sailings.
Not at the fiord. The coach and small-group days pick up in Queenstown or Te Anau, so your vehicle stays where you slept, and the Flight and Cruise Tour from Queenstown includes parking at its departure terminal at Remarkables Park Town Centre. The NZ$10 per hour charge at the main Milford Sound car park applies to the boat-only bookings, which list it as not included.
The Mariner is listed as 2 days from NZ$1,398 with private en suite cabins, dinner, breakfast and kayaks or tender boats. The Fiordland Jewel is 17.5 hours from NZ$1,449 and takes only 20 passengers a night, with a three-course dinner, kayaking, a tender-boat excursion and a top-deck hot tub, and its taxes and fees are already in the price. Passenger numbers and onboard activities drive the figure as much as hours do.
