Two hours on the water from the Milford Sound Visitor Centre, out past St Anne's lighthouse to the Tasman Sea and back in under Mitre Peak.
Updated 21 October 2026
The boat departs from the Milford Sound Visitor Centre and spends 2 hours on the fiord, which is enough time to reach the entrance, pass St Anne's lighthouse and head out into the Tasman Sea before turning back. Coming in from the open coast is the part shorter sailings often skip, and it is how the first settlers approached the fiord at the end of the 18th century. On the way the guides point out Bowen Falls, which drops 160 metres straight to the sea, Sinbad Gully as a textbook hanging valley, snow-capped Mount Pembroke, and Mitre Peak, 1,692 metres above the water.
The vessel is a smaller one, so it can sit closer to the rock walls and under the waterfalls than a large day boat. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are free on board. No food is included, so bring something to eat if you are sailing over lunchtime. Children under 3 travel free.
Rain changes the trip rather than ruining it. Fiordland takes more rainfall than any other part of New Zealand, over 7 metres a year at Milford Sound, and the waterfalls run hardest in it. Take a waterproof jacket in any month and plan to stand outside for at least part of the two hours, because the best views of Mitre Peak and the fiord walls come from the open deck rather than through glass.
Prices in New Zealand dollars. From NZ$179 per adult, rated 4.8 (1,646 reviews).
A smaller boat, hot drinks on board and a sailing that reaches the fiord entrance before turning back. Check in at the Milford Sound Visitor Centre 30 minutes before departure.

Among the cruise-only trips on this site, this one gives the longest standard time on the water at 2 hours; the boutique boat runs 1 hour 45 minutes from NZ$189 and holds the highest rating, and the large-boat sailing is the cheapest at NZ$143 on a larger vessel with more deck space. If you are starting in Queenstown, the coach and cruise day is a 12-hour commitment from NZ$275, with roughly five hours of driving each way and the cruise in the middle.
