What this Milford Sound luxury cruise day includes
The day runs 12.5 hours door to door and covers the 600 km Queenstown round trip plus a Nature Cruise of up to 2 hours on the fiord. Travel is on a premium glass-roof coach with reclining seats, extra legroom, air conditioning, USB charging ports and an onboard toilet, and the coach connects straight to the cruise at Milford Sound (Piopiotahi). Lunch is freshly prepared and eaten on the water; prices are from NZ$379 per adult, in New Zealand dollars, and the tour is rated 4.7 (684 reviews).
Commentary comes from a local coach driver in English, covering the history and ecology of the Milford Road and pointing out the short walks and photo stops along it. If English is not your first language, download the operator's free app before you leave Queenstown: it carries commentary in eight languages and works on the coach as well as the cruise, which matters because mobile coverage along the road is very limited.
The cruise itself goes down the fiord towards the Tasman Sea and back. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight out of the water, Bowen Falls drops 162 m into the head of the fiord and also supplies the Milford Sound settlement with power and water, and Stirling Falls falls 151 m into the fiord with the boats nosing in close to the base. Fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and kea are around all year; Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki) are seen at landing beaches between July and December.
Be honest with yourself about the length of the day. Pick-up is at 6.30am or 7.00am, the coach takes about five hours each way, and you will be back in Queenstown in the evening. Rain is common, with the fiord averaging over 7 metres of rainfall a year, and that is when the waterfalls are heaviest, so pack a rain jacket whatever the forecast says in town.
Premium coach, lunch and up to 2 hours on the fiord
Return glass-roof coach from Queenstown with reclining seats, USB charging and an onboard toilet, a Nature Cruise of up to 2 hours past Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls and Bowen Falls, plus a freshly prepared lunch. From NZ$379 per adult, 12.5 hours, rated 4.7 (684 reviews).
6 Two departure times run: 6.30am or 7.00am, both picking up at the Southern Discoveries Visitor Centre in Queenstown. Tea and coffee are included on board, and the driver explains which stops and short walks the day's weather allows.
Queenstown15 min The day starts on the shore of Lake Wakatipu and heads south-west towards Fiordland National Park. Queenstown to Milford Sound and back is 600 km, which is why the departure is so early.
Te Anau30 min A 30-minute break in Te Anau, the last town with shops, fuel and reliable phone signal. The remaining 120 km to Milford Sound takes about two hours without stops, and there are no shops or fuel along the way.
Eglinton Valley15 min A glaciated valley with steep sides and a flat floor, half a kilometre to two kilometres wide. The shingle bed of the Eglinton River shifts with every flood, so the braids look different year to year.
Lake Gunn A lake in red beech forest beside the Milford Road, around 78 km north of Te Anau at the Cascade Creek car park. The flat nature walk loop here takes about 45 minutes in full, and the coach stop is shorter than that.
Mirror Lakes Walk10 min An easy boardwalk about 56 km north of Te Anau, wheelchair accessible and roughly 15 minutes end to end. The reflections of the Earl Mountains only work on a calm surface, so a still morning is the one to hope for.
Cleddau River The Cleddau runs alongside the road on the Milford side of the Homer Tunnel and empties into the head of the fiord. You see it in pieces from the coach, then up close at The Chasm.
Monkey Creek10 min A glacier-fed spring in the upper Hollyford Valley, with clear water you can fill a bottle from. Kea often work the car park: do not feed them, since feeding is prohibited and the birds that linger near vehicles are the ones that get hit.
Homer Tunnel The tunnel is 1.2 km long, sits 945 m above sea level and drops at a gradient of 1 in 10 towards Milford Sound. It was completed in 1953 and is unlined rock inside; traffic signals control it in the summer peak, with waits of up to 20 minutes each way.
The Chasm Walk20 min A 20-minute loop on a well-maintained trail to the rock chasm and falls carved by the Cleddau River; the car park is about 109 km from Te Anau. The walk reopened on 24 April 2023 in modified form after flood damage in 2020, and the stop depends on weather and time.
Milford Sound120 min Check in at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal and board the Nature Cruise, up to 2 hours on the fiord with lunch served on board. The walls were carved by glaciers and keep going below sea level to depths of about 265 m.
Mitre Peak Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight out of the water in sheer rock. The boat passes it early on the way out and again on the way back in, usually with better light on the return.
Bowen Falls The fiord's highest waterfall drops 162 m from a hanging valley into the head of Milford Sound. It feeds a small hydroelectric scheme and supplies the drinking water for the settlement.
Sinbad Gully Behind Mitre Peak, Sinbad Gully is walled in by near-vertical granite cliffs that slowed the spread of introduced pests, so unusual native species survive there. The operator is a partner in the Sinbad Sanctuary Project, a conservation effort to restore the valley.
Stirling Falls Stirling Falls drops 151 m off the cliff, with a 1,300 m mountain behind it that makes the fall look smaller than it is. The sheer drop allows boats to move in under the base, so expect spray on the open deck.
Freshwater Basin, Milford Sound15 min The cruise ends back at Freshwater Basin, a short walk from the terminal. The coach then takes the Milford Road back to Queenstown, arriving in the evening at the end of the 12.5 hours.

How this luxury cruise day compares with other options
The coach day from Queenstown works if you want the driving handled, a seat with a glass roof over it and lunch included. The Te Anau departure is the one to take if you are already staying closer to the park and would rather spend 7 hours than 12.5 on the day. The Queenstown premium small group tour runs longer at 13 hours but caps the numbers and adds WiFi and hotel pick-up, while the boutique cruise on its own, at 1 hour 45 minutes, is for people who have already driven to the terminal.
