The boat leaves the Milford Sound Terminal at 3.10pm, cruises Piopiotahi through the late afternoon, then drops anchor; that is when the kayaks and the tender boat come out. Anyone looking for a Milford Sound cruise and kayak combination that fits inside an afternoon should look elsewhere, because this one runs 17.5 hours and you sleep on board.

Nine climate-controlled cabins take two people each, every one with its own en suite and sea views, in king twin or super king double layout. Dinner is three courses from the chef on board, and afterwards the crew play underwater film footage shot by the vessel's remote operating vehicle, which is how most passengers get to see what lives below the dark freshwater layer. The top-deck hot tub opens after dinner, weather permitting. Breakfast the next morning is cooked and continental, served around the second cruise and the run back to the terminal.

Bookings are open from 31 October 2026 to 25 April 2027. Transport to and from Milford Sound is not included: van connections from Te Anau or Queenstown carry a maximum of eight people and cost extra, and exclusive charters can be requested. Prices are in New Zealand dollars, from NZ$1,449 per adult, and all sales are final once booked.

Pack for rain, because the fiord gets plenty of it and the kayaking is in open water. Waterproof layers and something warm for the top deck matter more on this trip than on a short day cruise, since you are outside at dusk and again early the next morning.

The overnight, hour by hour

   Meet the crew at the Fiordland Discovery desk in the Milford Sound Terminal. Check-in is 2.35pm, boarding 2.50pm, departure 3.10pm. You return to the same terminal at about 8.45am the next morning.
