What the Milford Sound bus and cruise from Queenstown involves

Queenstown to Milford Sound and back is 600 km on one road, State Highway 94, and that distance sets the shape of the day. The total is 12 hours: roughly five hours of coach each way including stops, plus two hours on the water. Prices start from NZ$275 per adult and the tour is rated 4.7 (973 reviews).

Travel is in an air-conditioned coach with driver-guide commentary in English. Pickups run from the Athol Street bus stop and other stops in central Queenstown and along Frankton Road, so you do not drive the mountain road yourself. At the fiord you board a modern catamaran that runs the length of Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea, with indoor seating, a sun deck and a bar on board.

Tea or coffee and the cruise are included. Use the 30-minute Te Anau stop to buy lunch or top up snacks, because there are no shops or fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Pack rain gear in any season: average rainfall here is over 7 metres a year, and the waterfalls are at their biggest when it rains.

How the day runs, stop by stop

  1. Murihiku Southland 120 min
The coach leaves central Queenstown and follows Lake Wakatipu past the Devil's Staircase, then crosses deer, cattle and sheep country towards Te Anau. Two hours of driving with the mountains on your right, so take a window seat if you can.
  2. Te Anau 30 min
Scheduled rest break in Te Anau before the coach enters Fiordland National Park. This is the last reliable phone signal and the practical place to sort out coffee and food; after here, toilets are only at Knobs Flat and Milford Sound.
  3. Fiordland National Park 180 min
The 120 km from Te Anau to the fiord is the part people underrate. The driver-guide talks you through the valleys and stops for photos and short walks at points such as the Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Knobs Flat and Monkey Creek, before the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel, which is signal-controlled in the summer peak with waits of up to 20 minutes.
  4. Milford Sound 120 min
Two hours aboard the catamaran, hugging the cliffs on the way out to the Tasman Sea and back. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight from the water, the crew point out New Zealand fur seals and occasionally dolphins, and the boat noses in under Stirling Falls at the end. Stand on the bow for that and you will get wet.
  5. Fiordland National Park 120 min
After the cruise the coach heads back to Te Anau without stopping. Two hours to sleep, sort photos or watch the valleys in the late light.
  6. Te Anau 20 min
A shorter second break in Te Anau, long enough for the toilets and something to drink before the final leg.
  7. Murihiku Southland 120 min
The last two hours run back along Lake Wakatipu into Queenstown. Arrival is late in the evening, so plan nothing afterwards.

The coach day trips differ mainly in the vehicle, whether lunch is served and where you start. This page covers the standard air-conditioned coach with hot drinks; the glass-roof and buffet-lunch versions add 30 minutes and more comfort, while the Te Anau departure cuts the day to 8.5 hours because it skips the 600 km of Queenstown driving.
