What the Milford Sound cruise and hike day includes

The day lasts 9 hours and the van holds a maximum of 15 travellers. A local driver-guide collects you from your Te Anau accommodation, drives the 120 km north on State Highway 94, stops along the way for guided and self-guided nature walks, and gets you to the Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) Visitor Terminal for a cruise on a small vessel that runs the full length of the fiord and out towards the Tasman Sea. Prices start from NZ$327 per adult, in New Zealand dollars, and the tour is rated 5.0 (789 reviews).

Walking is the reason to choose this day over a straight coach transfer. The Milford Road has short tracks spaced along it: the wheelchair-accessible boardwalk at Mirror Lakes about 56 km north of Te Anau, roughly 15 minutes and best on a calm morning; the flat Lake Gunn Nature Walk loop from the Cascade Creek car park about 78 km out, roughly 45 minutes; The Divide, the lowest east-west pass in the Southern Alps; and The Chasm, whose car park sits about 109 km from Te Anau and whose walk reopened in modified form on 24 April 2023. Which ones you actually do depends on the weather, the Homer Tunnel signals and the cruise time, so leave the choice to the guide.

On the water the boat is small, which matters when you want to get close to the rock walls rather than photograph them from three decks up. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight out of the fiord and the glacier-carved walls carry on below sea level to about 265 m. New Zealand fur seals haul out most reliably at Seal Rock, bottlenose dolphins and kea are around all year, and Fiordland crested penguins are seen and heard at landing beaches between July and December. Keep your distance from seals, dolphins and penguins and let them come closer if they choose.

Pack for rain. Milford Sound averages over 7 metres of rainfall a year and wet days are when the waterfalls run hardest, so a proper rain jacket and shoes you can walk a damp boardwalk in are worth more than an umbrella. Between May and November the road can be snow-covered and chains may be required, and it is monitored around the clock by the Milford Road Alliance.

Lunch is a picnic, with vegetarian and gluten-free versions available if you flag them in advance. The tour departs Te Anau only, there is no Queenstown pickup, and children under 5 are not carried. There is no fuel and no shop between Te Anau and Milford Sound, toilets are at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford Sound, and mobile coverage along the road is very limited, so download anything you want on your phone before you leave town.

Milford Sound cruise and hike: how the Te Anau tours compare

Four Te Anau departures cover the same road with different priorities. This one is the walking option: 9 hours, 15 seats, nature walks on the way in and out. The Award Winning Milford Sound Full Day Tour & Cruise runs half an hour longer for slightly less, with morning tea and home baking and a looser mix of scenic stops. The Milford Track hike combo is the longest day at 11 hours and the most expensive of the four, and its 5.0 rating rests on a single review, so treat it as untested rather than proven. The 7-hour premium tour with lunch is the shortest and cheapest, which means less time out of the van.
