What this Milford Sound cruise from Queenstown day looks like
The tour runs 13 hours and costs from NZ$369 per adult, rated 4.9 (3,757 reviews). Prices in New Zealand dollars. Travel is in a small minibus with a driver-guide rather than a coach, which is why the stops are short and frequent instead of two long breaks.
The reason the day is so long is distance. Queenstown to Milford Sound and back is 600 km on State Highway 94, the only road into the fiord, and a return drive takes 12 to 14 hours with stops. Pickups are at 6:30am for the 6:30am departure and 7:00am for the 7:00am departure, from selected Queenstown accommodation; if you do not choose a pickup point when booking you are allocated the default meeting point at The Station.
At Milford Sound you board a boutique cruise with a small-boat operator that checks in at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal. The stop at the fiord is scheduled at 120 minutes, which covers check-in, the sailing and time at the terminal. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight out of the water and is usually the point where everyone stops talking.
Picnic lunch is included and dietary requirements are noted per person at booking, so flag them then rather than on the day. Water and snacks are provided. Booster seats are available for children aged 7 and under. There is no restroom on board the minibus, so use the stops at Te Anau and the fiord. Rain is normal here, with annual rainfall averaging over 7 metres, and the waterfalls are at their biggest on wet days, so pack a rain jacket in any season.

Queenstown The day starts in Queenstown with pickup at 6:30am or 7:00am. The driver-guide sets out the route while you leave town and points out landmarks on the way south.
Lake Wakatipu The road follows the shore of Lake Wakatipu, with views across the water to The Remarkables.
Devil's Staircase Lookout Point The winding section known as Devil's Staircase comes next, high above the lake and a good first photo stop of the morning.
Lake Te Anau20 min A 20-minute break in Te Anau, on the shore of New Zealand's second largest lake. The minibus then stops at Te Anau Downs, about 30 km further on, where the boat for the Milford Track leaves.
Eglinton Valley10 min Inside Fiordland National Park the road runs through the Eglinton Valley, a flat glacier-carved trough between high rock walls. A 10-minute stop.
Mirror Lakes Walk10 min Mirror Lakes sits about 56 km north of Te Anau. A short wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads to the pools that reflect the Earl Mountains, best when the air is still.
Lake Gunn5 min A five-minute photo stop at Lake Gunn, about 78 km from Te Anau, where a flat loop walk starts from the Cascade Creek car park.
Hollyford River and Falls Creek Past Lake Gunn the road runs beside the Hollyford River, full of boulders and rapids. Falls Creek drops into it, the first of the large waterfalls on this stretch.
Darran Mountains viewpoint10 min The road climbs into the Darran Mountains for a 10-minute stop. This is kea country, the world's largest alpine parrot. Watch them and keep your distance; feeding kea is prohibited, and five were killed by vehicles on the Milford Road between 3 April and 14 June 2024, three of them at Monkey Creek.
Homer Tunnel The Homer Tunnel is 1.2 km long and sits 945 m above sea level, with traffic signals in the summer peak and waits of up to 20 minutes each way. On the far side the valley drops steeply towards the fiord, and in rain the walls run with waterfalls.
Milford Sound120 min Arrival at Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) and check-in for the boutique cruise at the Visitor Terminal. Two hours are set aside here for the sailing and the terminal stop.
Mitre Peak From the boat you pass Mitre Peak, the triangular summit that rises 1,692 m from the water. The glacier-carved walls continue below the surface to depths of up to about 265 m.
Pops View Look Out10 min On the way back the minibus stops for 10 minutes at Pop's View, the Hollyford Valley lookout near The Divide, the lowest east-west pass in the Southern Alps. The driver-guide tells the stories of early Maori exploration here.
Queenstown The return leg is fully guided with breaks along the way, and drop-off is back in Queenstown at the end of the 13 hours.
