Cruise-only departures from the Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) Visitor Terminal, 1 hour 40 minutes or 2 hours on the water, from NZ$143.
Updated 21 October 2026
Two cruise styles sit under the same booking. The Classic Cruise Package is 1 hour 40 minutes on one of the larger boats, built for comfort and stability, with commentary in your language through the Milford Sound app. The Signature Cruise Package runs a full 2 hours on a smaller, character-rich vessel, with a crew member telling you about Fiordland as you go and a counter serving barista coffee, local craft beer and cabinet food.
Both sailings cover the length of the fiord and turn near the open coast, so you pass the same walls and waterfalls on the way back in different light. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight out of the water, and the glacier-carved rock keeps dropping below the surface to around 265 m. Seal Rock is the spot where New Zealand fur seals most often haul out; fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and kea are around all year, and from July to December Fiordland crested penguins (tawaki) can be seen and heard at landing beaches. Decks are open and the viewing is done standing up, so wind and spray are part of the sailing.
Milford Sound averages over 7 metres of rain a year, and the waterfalls are at their biggest when it pours. Bring a proper rain jacket in any season rather than hoping for a clear day. Prices in New Zealand dollars start from NZ$143 per adult, the lowest starting price of the cruise-only trips listed on this site, and the rating is 4.7 (567 reviews).
Check-in is 20 minutes before departure at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal. In the height of summer allow up to an hour to find a park and walk in, because the main car park is 10 minutes from the terminal and the midday coach peak fills it. Parking is not included in the fare: the machines at the main car park charge NZ$10 per hour and take card payment only. Driving the Milford Road before 8am or after 11am gets you past that peak, and mobile coverage is very limited along the way, with phones only at Knobs Flat, the Homer Tunnel for emergencies and Milford Sound itself.
Sail the length of the fiord on a 1 hour 40 minute or 2 hour departure from the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, from NZ$143, rated 4.7 (567 reviews).

Take this large-boat sailing if the starting price matters most and you want a larger boat with room to move around the decks. The boutique trip is 1 hour 45 minutes on a small boat from NZ$189 and rated 4.9 (3,254 reviews), the 2-Hour Milford Sound Scenic Cruise gives you a full two hours on a smaller boat from NZ$179, and if you are based in Te Anau rather than already standing at the terminal, the 9.5 hour full-day tour from NZ$315 covers the 120 km drive, the roadside stops and the cruise in one booking.
